TRAVEL REPORT
Sept. 10 – 14, 2012
Manila

Field Trip Overview

In this modern era, we all know that technology became the center of some of the peoples’ lives. Most of these people became so dependent on the things that the technology can do to them. Some people also cannot do work without the aid of the new technologies. As a BS in Information Technology and BS in Computer Science students, we are in line with the creation and development of these technologies. With that, we should be exposed and must be the first to know of the most current technology that exists. But, due to the fact that we were in a public school, and we do not have enough resources to support us in the learning process, we must have to be exposed outside our shell. And that is the reason why Field Trip and Seminars subject was part of the new curriculum.

Before we can proceed with what we are going to do on our field trip, a survey was conducted to know on what category the parent would want their children to have. Majority of us chose the Set A which comprises a single Major Field Trip, one National Seminar, one Minor Field Trip and an Interpersonal Activity.

It was on July 5 that we had our team building or interpersonal activity. Its purpose is for us to be acquainted with each and everyone so that when we will be on our trip outside Mindanao, we already know each other. We also had our Minor Field Trip at the PSSCC last August 25, 2012.  And on the 10th of September, we went to Manila for our 5-day field trip to visit and to learn about different IT companies as well as to attend to the National Seminar which is the Y4IT. It was a very nice experience for all of us to witness different kinds of bigger companies and establishments here in the Philippines.  It was also overwhelming to know that the IT industry made a great impact in the development of our country nowadays.

DAY 1
Our flight to Manila was 7:45 in the morning so we were expected to be at the airport two hours before. Most of us were first timers to ride on an airplane, so most of us were afraid but excited to experience it. Some of us also did not spend their time to sleep because they were too afraid that they might not wake with the alarm they set. I was so excited during that time since this would be another new experience for me. I arrived at the airport 5:30 in the morning together with my classmate. Since we are 15 minutes in advanced, we decided to take a video and picture of us. I can see faces of excitement as I was looking at my classmates’ expressions. I was indeed very happy that I can also share this same experience with my friends.  When we finally arrived at the Ninoy International Airport, we were welcomed by our travel agency which is the Maynilad Travel and Educational Tours. We ate our breakfast inside the bus since we were running out of time and we have to be on our first company visit at 11:00 in the morning.

Today, I went on a company visit to …
On our itinerary, we will be visiting two companies on our first day. And the first company that we visited was the DOST-STII or the Department of Science and Technology-Science Technology Information Institute and then after lunch, we immediately went to the Traffic Engineering (MMDA) at EDSA, Makati City.

What I learned?
Since we were tired that time, I haven’t got the chance to listen carefully with what the speakers said in front. But there were certain things that I know I learned from them. One of the famous lines that I like was ‘In order to transform, you have to be informed’. In this advanced world, we all know that technology became a part of the development of our country as well as in the field of science. I also learned that in order to transform, they have to have the synergy of forces in science and technology to create innovations and to work together to form their ideas into actions. In the Department of Science and Technology, they also have what they call HITS which means High, Impact, Technology, Solutions. Through technology they were able to create and developed different kinds of systems and inventions, one of which were the Hybrid Weather Monitor Sensor, Vacuum Packaging Machine, OL Trap, Automated Guide way Transit System and many more.

On the second company which is the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, there were also certain things that I learned. Same with the Public Safety and Security Command Center here in Davao City, they are also the one who maintains the peace and order of the city. One of the primary concerns of the MMDA is the traffic.  They monitor the traffic of the city and the crimes happening by the cameras they build around the metropolitan. They are also using huge monitors to see the 360 degrees view shot by the cameras. I also learned that they are using Metro Manila traffic navigator in monitoring the city that helps them view the traffic information.

What I like?
I like the DOST-STII company simply because they introduced us formally and discussed to us important information that we, students must know. They also shared to us about what the current issues they are facing today and on how we can greatly help them by developing innovative and creative ideas.

On the other hand, what I like about the MMDA is that they allowed us to view their monitoring room wherein we saw the people doing their job or the people behind the CCTV cameras viewing around the city. They answered also all our doubts and questions to them.

What I didn’t like?
At the DOST-STII, what I didn’t like is that there were only few parts of the lecture about technical topics which would be much more related with our courses. I also didn’t like the venue of their lecture area since it makes me dizzy with their dim environment. It would be much more interesting if the environment is really alive.
However, what I didn’t like about the MMDA is that they don’t have bigger spaces for their lecture part. There were 69 of us inside a single room that is not really good when you want to listen to them and by that you cannot concentrate.

DAY 2
This is the second day of our trip and I guess this day some of us could rest for a bit since this is the only place that we will be at base on our itinerary. It was 5:00 in the morning when Kuya Carlo called to wake us up. We were very tired get up but we have to, so that we can have our breakfast at the lobby and be on time for our next visit. All of us were finally on the bus at 6:30 in the morning. Since, it was too early to go directly to UP, we had our side trip at the ABS-CBN compound wherein we took pictures at the famous house in the Philippines which is the PBB house. After that, we were on our way to the University of the Philippines. We also took pictures at the famous statue of oblation and then went on for the registration.

Today, I went on a company visit to …
Today, I went on a company visit to UP Diliman. The Y4IT was held there so it was expected that thousands of participants from other schools will be participating on the said event. There were three venues inside the school wherein the events where going on. We chose first to visit the UP Bahay ng Alumni since the UP was over crowded and then we went to the UP theatre in the afternoon.
The opening remarks were given to us by the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE) President and as well as a USeP professor who is no other than our very own Dr. Randy Gamboa. We were so proud to see our teacher giving speech in front of hundreds of participants from other schools. And to show our deepest gratitude, we made a very loud shout and applause after his opening remarks.  There were also some more inspiring messages before the event finally started.

What I learned?
When we were at the UP Bahay ng Alumni, I learned about the development and trends in the arts of animation and also the ways on how to make marketing as easy as it is. First is to make the product, second is to give the price, find a place to sell it in and do some promotions. There are also ways on how to do your promotions. One is through digital signage when you want to promote your design and another thing is the data screen when you want to design for information.

On the afternoon schedule, we went to the more convenient place which is at the UP theatre since the program at the UP Bahay ng Alumni will end at noon. There were lots of speakers that inspire each and every one of us to strive more on our dream. During the lecture one speaker that caught my attention is Ms Samantha Jade Sadural of the University of the Philippines Baguio with her project called SPREAD (Speech and Phoneme Recognition as Education Aid for the Deaf Children). This is an application having a voice recognition system that analyzes the vocalization of the child and provide feedback on the proper way of pronouncing a certain set of words. She shared to us her challenges and trials in life before she successfully developed the said application.
I also learned about ways on how to prepare the career that we may chose someday. One of the speaker said that having the BSIT and BSCS course is not really familiar to the ears of many of the Filipinos. Some may ask. What do you do? Or what is your job? Oftentimes we really do not know what we were doing or what would be the possible term or the word for the job that we have that would probably be understood by the people. During the lecture I also learned and seen how the editing process of a movie takes place.

What I like?
What I like about the Youth for Information Technology Seminar is that it inspires each and every one of us to strive on our dreams in life especially in the field of technology. There were some of the aspiring young speakers there who shared their life experiences and success in their lives. I also liked the seminar because I got to learn more about the field or the course that I took.

What I didn’t like?
I haven’t got the chance to tour around the whole campus as well as the other venue of the event which is at the UP Film Institute. However, my experience at the University of the Philippines was good and so there weren’t things that I really did not like about the environment or the people or the event. Being at the Youth for Information Technology is a nice and fun experience.

DAY 3
Today is the third day of our company visit. Since this was already our third day, we became immune with the environment as well as with the wakeup call. We woke up as early as yesterday and so we were prepared and got on the bus before time.

Today, I went on a company visit to …
On the third day of our tour, we visited the Innovation Laboratory and Telecommunications Education Center of PLDT or the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. And according to our itinerary, after PLDT we will be visiting the Social Security System (SSS) at the East Avenue Quezon City.

What I learned?
There were lots of things that I learned about the PLDT Company since they have prepared everything for us. After our orientation, they tour us on their mini museum where we found the evolution of the telephone since the early times. I learned that it was on November 28, 1938 that the PLDT Company was born. On 1959-1968, they call it the “Age of Change” because the PLDT was transformed itself into a Filipino controlled corporation in 1967 with entry of industrial headed by Ramon Conjuanco. On the year 1969-1978, it was entitled the “Age of Control”. It was because they were providing power of control in the hands of consumers through the invention of the picture phone in 1970. And on 1979-1988, the age of revolution was born. Cellular phones, fax, X-4 program electronic switching equipment was developed. On the year 1998, the first single chip microprocessor was announced.

On the other way around, I also learned a lot about the Social Security System or the SSS. On their technical part of the lecture, they shared to us the evolution of their technology. It was on 1970 that the SSS started using computers supplied by the NCR. On the year 1983-1986, they have been using other installations to do batch processing due to SSS NCR legal dispute. And on the year 1986-1992, they started using oracle RDBMS. And on the year 1992 onwards, they have been expanding their services as a result of increased membership having a total of 101 online branches in the country.

I also learned that being a member of the SSS or the Social Security System is very important most especially when you are in an emergency. SSS is somehow a call for help where you can get your benefits and it is also with the SSS that you can get your retirement grants. Being a member of the SSS will not only benefit us in the near future but it also helps our country as well.

What I like?
What I like about the PLDT Company is their nice accommodation to us. Their environment is also friendly and they were able to tour us around their building. We got to learn more about their company because we have seen the actual work place and the systems that they are using. I also liked the way that the SSS accommodated us; they even prepared a simple program for us. They also give us tokens of appreciation every time we got the answers correct to their questions. They allowed us also to tour around their building and they’ve been able to demonstrate to us on how to apply for the SSS membership. It was really a nice experience back there.

What I didn’t like?
One thing that saddened me is that we were not allowed to take pictures inside. It would be nice to keep a picture to their mini museum. But due to the strict security, we are not allowed to do so.  And another thing that upsets me is that they are not concerned with the time. We started our orientation at 9:00 am but we ended up at 1:00 in the afternoon. Our energy was declining that we weren’t able to listen carefully with the last part of the lecture. However, we really learned a lot from them.

The thing that I didn’t like about the SSS is that there is only few of us who experienced or somehow seen the actual process on how to apply for a membership. Simply because, they do have smaller spaces enough to accommodate half of us. Even so, we were able to understand a bit of it because he explained it to us briefly before they did the actual thing. Overall, it was a nice and cool experience.

DAY 4
On the fourth day of our tour we only visited one company since it is located far from where we were staying. And also it was on our itinerary that we are going to the place of fun and excitement which is the Enchanted Kingdom at Laguna in the afternoon. I consider this day as the best day of all since this day doesn’t focused only on the things that we have to learn from different companies but this day reminds us that we can also have fun on our tour and visit places that we’ve never been before.

Today, I went on a company visit to …
The only company that we visited today is the Tsukiden Electronics Philippines, Inc.  (formerly known as Laguna Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) provider in the Philippines. They provide services like PCB assembly, SMT on flex assembly, and computer box build assembly.

What I learned?
The Tsukiden Electronics Philippines, Inc. located in Canlubang, Calamba City is the only branch of this Japanese company here in the Philippines. On their lecture part I learned about the process on how they do the making of electronic chips. It was not an easy job since it requires more effort and patience when you are trying to put those little things together. That is the reason why when we enter to their building, we are not allowed to make any noise that may result to the disturbance of the workers. They also showed us videos on the actual process. I also learned that they are the ones who program to some of the known printer brands.

What I like?
What I like about this company is that they do have the cleanest surroundings and the quietest place  among all the companies we’ve been to. Mainly because it is a Japanese company and their job needs to be at the safest, cleanest and quietest place as ever to avoid distractions and mistakes. There lecture room also is very comfy that’s why we were able to listen to their discussions and mainly because their company is much related to our courses most especially the Bachelor of Computer Science students.

What I didn’t like?
Their company was really nice because it was much related to our courses. But much to our disappointments, they did not allow us to have a plant tour instead they only showed to us videos on the process of making their products. It was also mentioned on their lecture some things that we probably don’t want to know like every year they do their Christmas Parties, Banner Contests and the likes. That is why it became the laugh talk of most of my classmates when we were at the bus.

DAY 5
Today is the last day of our trip. We can see faces of sadness and excitement among my classmates as we are going to bid our farewell to our tour guides, manager of our tour, bus drivers and to our hotel. Our flight was scheduled at 6:00 in the evening so we are expected to be at the airport 2 hours before the time. But before that, in the morning, we were scheduled to visit the last company on our list on our last day. And we were so amazed and inspired. The tour indeed saves the best company for last.

Today, I went on a company visit to …
J.P. Morgan and Chase Company located at Bonifacio Global, Taguig City, Philippines. It was the only branch of the company here in the Philippines.  On our way in, we were so astounded because based on what I saw; it was the richest company I have ever been to. The security there was also tight because when you would bring a camera, it must be registered first. And one of the guides there said that if you would take a picture inside, your camera will be confiscated and be brought to Singapore. That is why we only bought one camera for everyone.

What I learned?
I learned that J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. was established in the Philippines year 1961. Its primary service is investment banking, commercial banking and treasury; equity sales, research, and trading operations; and retail loan and card services in the republic. I also learned that this company is the richest company or shall I say the leading financial firm globally. They do their first class business in a first class way. It was also being featured by the Fortune magazine as being the most admired company. Being at the J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. is a great opportunity for us.

What I like?
I really like the J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. because they allowed us to be in their company and learn more about their services. I like the way they accommodate us and appreciate us when we are trying to asked questions from them. They even give tokens of appreciation to my classmates who showed much enthusiasm about their company by asking lots of questions. I also like their free drinking machine. They said that it was built for those applicants who would wait at the lobby. I also like the interior of their building because as we were inside, you can feel that you’re a first class person. It was so classy and clean. It was as if you were in movies.

What I didn’t like?
The only thing that I get disappointed is that we weren’t able to take pictures inside during lectures. But I also understand it because it was all for the security purposes. However, we were able to take picture of us together at the lobby so it was all worth it.

APPENDIX

Recommendation

We were the third batch who took the subject Field Trip and Seminars ever since it became part of the BSIT and BSCS curriculum. But before we can proceed to our proper field trip outside Mindanao, lots of requirements must be submitted to the President of this University so that it will be official. One of the major troubles that we faced is that we weren’t able to submit the requirements two weeks before the supposed submission. And that is the reason why we experienced cramming, stressed and exhaustion just because we worked with the requirements a week before our flight. It was for the reason that it was also too late to realize that the CHED ordered a new memorandum about the field trip and seminars requirements. My recommendation to the next batch of field trip and seminars is that they will be much aware of the time so that proper requirements for the field trip will be prepared beforehand.

Another thing that I can recommend to the FTS program as well as to the future batch is to tell their parents in advanced if they are sure enough to take the subject. Money is hard to find. During our meeting, when the final payment for the trip was announced, some of us weren’t able to pay the amount on time. That is why not all of us got the cheapest airline ticket.

The last thing that I can recommend is to choose the best among the best companies here in the Philippines. It was really a great honor and a pleasure to be inside one of the biggest and largest companies in the country. It would also be best to choose those companies who would mainly talk about things related to BSIT and BSCS field.
